If you’ve looked through my blog so far you probably saw me ranting about women not wanting their photos taken. I also closed the post by saying that I was going to get brave and have my own photos taken soon. Well, I kept up my end of the bargain. You also probably saw me talk in the last newborn post about my awesome friend Jamie. We have found that we have soooo many things in common, but are still unique in style. The important thing is that you have core values and thoughts that line up and then everything else is the fun stuff. Jamie leans toward preppy and classic. I love a mix of vintage and modern. If we were stores, she’d be J. Crew and I’d be Anthropologie.
Something many people also know about me is I am frugal; aka, I love a bargain; aka, I love free stuff. Believe me, I will throw down on something I feel is of value, but if I can barter or use a coupon, I’ll do it! :) Jamie and I decided that we both wanted a chance to do a shoot and also be shot. Shoot me. At the end of the day it was such a good experience. We weren’t expecting what we got out of it at all. The biggest thing I took away was what it was like to be the subject. I realized how much direction you really need to give as a photographer, even for just the little details. We both found ourselves yelling, “where should I put my hand?!?!” I think I’ve taken some of the director’s role for granted because I’ve shot so many toddlers and little ones. You sure aren’t telling them what to do!
The last time I was in a shoot it was all about keeping our 18-month-old contained and before that was my wedding in 2006! As adults we are never done learning, no matter the subject. Don’t be scared to put yourself out there even if you feel dumb in the moment! There was one moment when I felt so awkward hanging off a pole just as a girl walked by and told me how pretty I looked. It was a much-needed boost to keep going. As Nike says, Just Do It! The only things in my life I regret are my regrets.
We obviously went hoping for those “golden hour” shots, but ended up being able to play after-hours too. The nighttime with the shop and strung lights was such a fun and new setting to shoot in. I think we got some great shots at the end of the day! Or should I say days? The original plan was to shoot both of us on the same day, but due to a mix-up it was just me on the first day and Jamie on the second. It’s cool to see how we each took the exact same location and came up with totally different shots.
There are going to be a LOT of photos in this post, but I couldn’t narrow it down any further! I hope you enjoy. Obviously the ones taken of me were taken by Jamie; all the editing on both sets was done by yours truly.
If you don’t know me in person….that’s me, nice to meet you! ♥rachael
When you meet me you’ll see that I often laugh like this: (mouth open way to wide and a liiiittle too intense)
And you’ll often see me in leggings and slouchy boots. I loved this photo for a few reasons. I am an absolute sucker for a detail shot and it’s a detail shot of my favorite boots!
Now, in case it wasn’t totally obvious, here’s Jamie! I mean, hello hot mama! (Side note: She so got hit on by the 17-year-old clerk at Subway that night. haha)
Anyone notice anything wrong with giant model lady’s legs??? I can’t stop staring at it now that I see it!
I encourage everyone to step out of their comfort zone and get your photos done NOW. We’re always going to be too _______ or need to do ________, but now is the only time you can do it!
Email me to set up a shoot. Just you, you and your other half or you and you other pieces of your pie!
